Shell UsersWelcome to the Shell THESIS Information and Support Center. This page is intended to offer you useful information about the THESIS code with links to current activities and developments as well as frequently asked questions and useful tips, etc. If you wish to add something to these pages, please feel free to contact the administrator below. What is THESIS ? - THESIS (The Health Environment and Safety Information System) is a qualitative risk management tool, which models the Hazards and Effects Management Process (HEMP). It acts to define the interrelations between hazards, threats, consequences, barriers and controls and shows how people and procedures are assigned to such. It is a very simple but very powerful tool, which has gained popularity due to the ability to effectively impart this information across businesses. The information can be displayed graphically (via a bow-tie diagram), it can be exported to pre-defined report templates, or it can be exported in other formats for post processing of data.
- THESIS was conceived by Shell, post Cullen. A Joint Development Agreement (JDA) was signed by Shell International E&P BV and EQE International Ltd (a UK registered risk management consultancy) in 1996/7 which empowered EQE to develop the software in conjunction with Shell.
- EQE International Ltd was purchased by the ABS Group of Companies, Inc. in 1999. ABS Consulting Ltd (ABSC) took over the development and licensing responsibility.
- By agreement with Shell, ABSC facilitates the supply of THESIS to the Non-GI community and by license agreement to third party businesses (consultants, contractors and owner/operators, etc.).
How do I get a copy? - Shell GI users are able to obtain THESIS via their internal GI system.
- Shell Non-GI users must now enter into a Software License Agreement with ABS Consulting. This will have more favourable financial terms than the 3rd party licence.
How do I get user help? - The first line of inquiry could be via frequently asked questions to establish if there are any known issues that the user should know. Technical queries should, in the first instance, be sent to the Shell Help Desk.
- If the Shell Helpdesk is unable to answer the query, this will be forwarded to ABS Consulting to review and respond.
What software is available to us? - Shell GI-D currently supports THESIS Version 5.5 (ABSC Build 20090227). An update to this version is currently being scripted and should be made available to GI users in February 2010.
- Upgrades within THESIS 5 are available outside the GI-D environment. Due to the constraints imposed by the Shell GI-D system, it is necessary to have the code managed and formerly scripted. For this reason, hasty fixes and upgrades cannot readily be released to GI users.
- THESIS Version 5 has been been developed as an Enterprise/Web-based application. THESIS Enterprise is now available on the Shell GI network.
- THESIS Version 5E has the following advantages:
- .NET software architecture
- New dialogue fields
- Global lookups and lookup management
- Enhanced reporting module
- Windows Vista supported
- Enhanced user friendliness
- Supports multiple case file viewing
- Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) module for semi-quantitative risk assessment
- Support of "Best Practice" templates for bow-tie management
- Interaction with other Shell network tools
- As an enterprise tool updates will be readily incorporated
- Navigable HTML bowties
- Enhancement suggestions are placed on a development register which is discussed during regular THESIS Project Management Steering Committee (PMSC) meetings and a decision is taken whether and when to issue a revised build and what should be considered during this build.
Known Issues within earlier builds of Version 5.0 Version 5.5 (via GI) has the following known issues:- With very large 'hazards' THESIS performance can become a bit sluggish. This is found to be related to the constant need to redraw the graphic image so as to maintain tree/graphic synchronisation. This will occur even if the graphic is 'not being used.' A switch has beem introduced to disable the graphics whilst a new engine is prototyped.
